Incoming 6th Graders


Welcome Sixth Graders!

Middle School is a wonderful, exciting adventure.  As a middle school student you will have more freedom, more independence, and more fun.  With that freedom comes more responsibility.  

Students are usually more successful and enjoy school more when they know what to expect.  In the menu bar at the right side of this page are some links to help you become familiar with Hudson Middle School.

Below is list of electives available for 6th graders.

Students will be introduced to the many aspects of Art, which include elements of art, principles of design, art criticism, and art history.  Students will begin with the basics of drawing and how to “See”.  Students will experiment with various types of art media such as graphite, colored pencils, charcoal ink, and pastels for drawing.  They will have the opportunity to work with tempera paint and watercolors in painting, and for 3-D art they will get to use clay and paper Mache’.  Students will learn the techniques of 3-D drawing and shading, the use of perspective, light, and shadow.  Students will get the chance to use their self-expression in many projects.  Fees: $3.00 for the clay unit

Band:   Ramona Elliott: elliottrs@hudsonisd.org 

Beginning band is a class that is open to anyone who has an interest in learning how to play a wind or percussion instrument. No experience needed! Band directors will assist students with choosing the correct instrument and will teach students how to read music. Practicing your instrument is required, and students receive grades based on practice and performance.  Students will demonstrate their skills in two concert performances (at the end of each semester). Being a member of the band can provide students with new experiences and opportunities throughout MS and HS.  Instruments available: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, & percussion.  Fees: Cost of instrument, required supplies, and approximately $35 for Band book (Scholarships available for certain instruments based on need)

Choir:   Mary Turner: maryturner@hudsonisd.org

Students will learn how to be better singers.  They will experience different types of music and have opportunities to perform that music for family and friends.  Students will also learn to read music through games and group practice.  6th Grade Choir will perform at least 3 times per school year.  Performances are mandatory and count as a major grade assignment.  Students who participate in every performance will be invited to join the entire choir department for an end-of-year field trip.  There is no audition for choir; however, students must be ready to work hard and be committed.  Fees: $20 for Choir Polo shirt to wear during performances

NewsCrew:  Misty Mitchell: mitchellm@hudsonisd.org

HMS NewsCrew is a group of students who report on campus happenings, current events, and human-interest stories through video and with the publication of their monthly #buzzhms Magazine.  NewsCrew members have duties like investigation, research, writing news articles, video & editing work, and photography.  Students interested in this program must have the highest level of responsibility and self-driven character.  They must be able to work independently and in groups to meet deadlines.  *If interested submit your application at the following web address: http://goo.gl/forms/tYNQoQaVoE
