Unit 2 - Exploration

Unit 2

Exploration

How & Why people came to North America

Reasons for Exploration: God, Gold, & Glory

Impact of Columbus: Wiped out the native population

Jameston: 1st English colony, Virginia Company, 1607, John Smith

Pilgrims & Puritans: Mayflower, Plymouth, Massachusetts

Other Colonies: Roanoke, William Penn, James Oglethorp, Dutch

Explorers helped to discover our world.  Famous explorers to remember are:

De Soto, Marc Polo, Magellan

Christopher Columbus hoped to reach China and the Indian Spice Islands by sailing westward. When the Portuguese king would not sponsor his voyage, he asked Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain.  When Columbus reached a group of islands across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, he was certain he had reached his goal. Columbus called the native people Indians. This is why the Caribbean islands are known as the West Indies. Columbus made three more voyages to the Caribbean, but he never realized his mistake.

Sadly, the effects of finding the “New World”

were not beneficial to the natives that resided there.
