This website provides free grammar and punctuation lessons. We have been using this website in class since the second week of school. Students can access the lessons and practices online during and after school. The only requirement is that they be in English class when they take a quiz. Most of the quizzes count as daily grades and are timestamped. They use their alphakey (Hudson student) login and their lunch#@hisd password.  It is also free to parents and students. You can create a login from home for your child and have him/her spend 15 minutes a day improving their editing skills.

Journal Topics

Before you do anything, ask how you would feel if someone videotaped you and played it on the evening news. Would you want your mother, your father, your friends, your teacher, your future children, or your future boss to see you? If not, DON'T DO IT!

Students copy the quote or prompt in their journal. They are given a variety of ways to write about it, including: simplifying, rephrasing, analyzing, responding, or giving an example. Students discuss in small group and share with the class. This is one of my favorite activities because students share their personal perspective.
